Profile
That is what inspired the name for this tranquil Velddrif farm, the Malachite Kingfisher (Kuifkopvisvanger in Afrikaans). While we were in the process of launching the business we were pondering on a name for the farm. One morning while having coffee a Malachite Kingfisher came and sat on the tank outside the window. While admiring its antics I had a lightbulb moment and Kuifkopvisvanger was born.
As the farm got its name so did the cottages, rooms & caravan. During each renovation process, a specific bird was hanging around ensuring their habitat is not disturb. There is a little story behind every cottage but more about this later.

Over the years we have identified 180 different bird species on the farm and the marshlands. If you’re lucky you might be able to spot a few rarities like the Wilson Phalarope, that’s been spotted on the Saltpans. Birdwatchers and nature lovers can enjoy fun outings to the Saltpans with Jan on a guided tour and you can gain some knowledge of how salts are produced. You absolutely MUST take your camera with picture-perfect photos.
Kuifkopvisvanger is situated on the banks of the Berg River where fishing enthusiasts can try their hand at catching the big one for the day from the riverbanks. Fish on the menu are Kabeljou, Steenbras and Elf, have the fire ready for a lekker/delicious fish braai. If fishing is not your style you can enjoy a canoe ride, a stroll along the riverfront or you can test your endurance with a bicycle ride across the farm.
Here tranquility is the order of the day, with only the sounds of nature and the Fish Eagle as the soundtrack to your stay it is the ideal spot to unwind and recharge. Come for the day or stay a few days, we look forward to seeing you soon.
