Profile
Piketberg Museum
The Piketberg Museum exudes a unique blend of history and charm, its origins traced back to the generous bequest of Piketberg resident Mr. AJ Liebenberg. Established two years after his passing, the museum was born from his home and its contents gifted to the Piketberg Municipality.
In 1983, the Piketberg Cultural Historical Museum opened its doors within Mr. Liebenberg’s former residence, where it resided for 15 years. It later relocated to a building adjacent to the old Synagogue on Church Street, reflecting Edwardian architectural influences and evoking the ambiance of an early 1900s homestead, furnished mostly with items from the 1920s.
Within its archives lies the intriguing tale of the Piketberg Jewish community, alongside a precious assortment of original school yearbooks and photographs of past residents. Many artifacts showcased were generously donated by locals, enriching exhibitions that offer a delightful array of historical treasures. Notably, the Piketberg Museum was honored with the “Best Museum in the Western Cape” award for 2012/2013 by the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport.
An added gem to the museum is its enchanting medicinal herb garden, curated by a former museum curator. A visit to this quaint town would be incomplete without exploring this garden. Be sure to obtain a map of the Piketberg Historic Route to fully appreciate the scenic historical tapestry woven throughout the town.
