Jan Dunckaert Museum

The Jan Danckaert Museum in Porterville, Western Cape, is a cultural heritage site housed in one of the town’s oldest buildings, dating back to 1861. Named after Jan Danckaert, a Dutch East India Company explorer who led a reconnaissance expedition through the area in 1660, the museum offers insights into the region’s colonial history.
Originally constructed as a court and prison in 1879, the building later served various roles, including municipal offices and a milk depot. In 1979, it was repurposed as a museum and declared a National Monument in 1988. Today, visitors can explore preserved prison cells and exhibits showcasing local culture, customs, and traditions.
The museum’s collections include vintage farming equipment, traditional household items, and displays on early settlers, reflecting the area’s agricultural heritage. Additionally, it features exhibits on Khoisan history, highlighting the indigenous culture of the region.
